Every once in a while you may encounter error 0x80070091 while installing AVG antivirus to your PC. This error has been experienced most by users with Windows XP operating system installed on their machines; but there have also been a few cases in Windows Vista and later versions. The cause of this error cannot be pinpointed and it varies from user to user. To ensure that your AVG installation is event-free, there are a few guidelines you should adhere to. They basically narrow down the probability of encountering bugs during and after AVG installation.
- Before installing AVG, ensure that you are logged in as an administrator, or have administrator credentials with you.
- Disable any other antispyware programs installed on your PC.
- If you have no use for any of the antispyware programs, uninstall them.
Removing error 0x80070091
If you had already installed AVG before the error popped up, it is advisable you perform a clean uninstall of AVG first. Here is how to do it:
- Download the AVG uninstall utility from the AVG website.
- In case your download disappears before you run it, for to the directory C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgoff2k.dll or C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG8\avgoff2k.dll for 64-bit and 32-bit systems respectively.
- Redo the download.
- Run the downloaded file as Administrator.
- Restart your computer.
- Now remove C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS) or C:\Documents and settings\All users\Application data\AVG8. This applies for Win XP or 2000. For Windows Vista and later, remove the folders C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS), C:\ProgramData\AVG8, and C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\AVG8
- Download the latest version of AVG antivirus available. You can choose your preferred versions from here.
- Now run it as an administrator. After completion of installation, update AVG.
- Restart your computer.
